Joey's; Windy River Winery

You might be surprised when you walk into that pink building on the 3000 block of Northside Avenue. There's actually a fairly attractive new restaurant inside, and it's called Joey's.

That's right, people still name restaurants after themselves these days. This one's named after Joey Spicer. He opened the place about two months ago with his partner, Mike Berry, who runs the kitchen.

Joey's has a casual name and a menu to match. When asked to describe it, Spicer says, "We do a little of everything." A little of everything means pizzas, sandwiches, steaks and pastas. The vegetarian food is standard, too, with veggie lasagna, burgers and similar meatless dishes. Prices range from a few bills for the lowly cup of soup to the pricier items like the 10 oz. filet with crab imperial.

Most of the menu fits under the $10 budget, though, so Joey's is looking like a popular new family place for the North Side. It's open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m.-10 p.m., and on Saturdays from 6-10 p.m. 266-3314.

It's not too early to start thinking about Valentine's Day, especially if you want to make a good impression. Consider a trip north to Windy River Winery for Roue & Chocolates & Dance, a tasting event featuring chocolates and vino.

Don't worry, cheapskates, this event won't leave you broke. For $6 a person, you get the tasting, tour and take-home signature wineglass. "Roue & Chocolates & Dance" takes place Feb. 9 and 10, noon-5 p.m. in Beaverdam. For reservations and directions, call 449-6996. For more information, check out windyriverwinery.com.
