Re: “Professor Complains of Discrimination at Virginia State University

I am greatly disturbed to read about VSU's behavior toward Dr. Byrge. Being the son of a university professor as well as a journalist, I am well aware that boards of visitors are not supposed to be actively involved in evaluating a professor’s dossier. VSU should not have tolerated this such a serious lapse of ethics, which I believe in itself should be a subject of a separate investigation. Perhaps such behavior by VSU isn’t surprising, however, given the fact that the university has lost more than one sizable discrimination lawsuit in the past. That is no reason for them to be anxious to lose another, of course, and Professor Byrge should take heart, and some consolation, that his highly-regarded standing, excellent track record and what is surely a legitimate lawsuit is serving him well in the court of public opinon, as I believe it will in a court of law. Which needn't be the case if VSU would come to its senses and grant this professor the tenure and fairness he clearly merits and deserves.
