Jail Inmates to Compete in Talent Show for Post-Release Job Offer

Richmond City Jail is hosting an inmate talent show Friday, the winner of which will receive a job offer upon release. Officials say the event will take place in the jail’s mess hall and feature gospel music, hip-hop, poetry, comedy, and art.

From the press release:

The winner will have a unique talent, an intense desire to succeed, fierce determination, and the sheer will to make a significant life change. They will have a passion and aptitude for business, which will have previously been displayed through the cover letter, resume, job application, business plan, and class participation. He/She will have a unique talent that is of interest to the general public. The aspiring entertainer will also have strong verbal and written communication skills, a pleasant and inviting personality, a high degree of integrity, and the understanding that success in this business has more to do with preparation than performance.

It’s maybe not quite as strange as it sounds: the event is the culmination of the jail's job preparation course. And inmate talent shows are apparently a thing. The release says the job offer will come from one of the job-prep instructors, Michael White, the creator of the local competition RVA Has Talent. The winner will also receive coaching from White and the chance to perform at the Speakeasy.
