Re: “Teach for Richmond?

Rick James I'll have you know that I taught high and middle school in science for 9 years before going back to school to get my masters and phd. I spent countless hours working with all types of students in an effort to instill a love for science. Many of my students have gone on to be teachers and scientists and otherwise productive citizens. I have had the pleasure of meeting many of them as adults and that is always reward. I take the education of RPS children very seriously, that is why I strongly oppose the use of TFA. I know how difficult it is to teach from my personal experiences and based on sound research. It will be unjust to put untrained TFA teachers in our RPS schools no matter how smart and well meaning they may be. RPS needs teachers specifically trained to teach high needs students and that cannot happen in 5 weeks. Students in VCU Master of Teaching Secondary Science program earn a 33 hour degree which includes one full semester of student teaching. I then support my graduates with 2 years of monthly dinner meetings to help them navigate through their early years. RPS also needs administrators and central office folks how are willing to work with parents and the community to remedy the behavioral issues and seeming lack of motivation to succeed by many of our students. I would bet that if we really made an effort as a community we can get our school system on the right path. I'm willing to assist. What will you do?
