International Contest Honors Style Art Director; Writer Wins State Award

In an international competition honoring newspaper design, Style Weekly Art Director Jeffrey Bland received an award of excellence competing against publications with circulations of 49,999 or less.

Bland took honors for his entry in Features Page Designer Portfolio in the 30th Edition Best of Newspaper Design Competition, co-sponsored by the Society of News Design and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

Judges gave the nod to Bland's cover design for the story “Adult Supervision,” which featured a naked woman with a well-placed fig leaf in the shape of Virginia. Bland's winning work will appear online and in the annual book, “The Best of Newspaper Design.”

In a separate competition, Style Weekly contributor Nicole Anderson Ellis was recently honored by the Southern Environmental Law Center.

Ellis' cover story, “Land Grab” — published July 16 — won the 2009 Phillip D. Reed Memorial Award for Outstanding Writing on the Southern Environment in the journalism category. The annual award “seeks to enhance public awareness of the value and vulnerability of the region's natural heritage by giving special recognition to writers who most effectively tell the stories about the South's environment.”

Ellis' story chronicled the fast-disappearing green spaces in Virginia, and how individual property owners' rights were being affected by the state. The story explores sprawl, development and Gov. Tim Kaine's attempts to address the issue — and whether those attempts had been effective.

The award was handed out during the Festival of the Book in Charlottesville March 21.
