Inside Your Friendly Neighborhood Crack Ring

They go by Apple Jacks, Chuck Wagon, Smoothe, Smurf, EZ, Tae and Steve, and an indictment unsealed last week alleges the seven of them ran a drug ring in western Henrico County that distributed more than a pound of crack.

The details included in the indictment, filed by federal prosecutors in U.S. District Court, offer a glimpse into the everyday — and sometimes mundane — workings of the local drug trade.

Prosecutors listened secretly while their targets worked out drug deals in vaguely cryptic language and swapped cash for crack, according to the indictment.

"What you doin'?," asked the group's supplier, identified as John Doe No. 1, in a October phone call.

"Man, be waiting on you, what I'm doin'," replied Donte Beard, who goes by Tae, according to agents.

"Um, what you talking about?" the supplier later asked Beard.

"Three," Beard replied, according to the indictment.

Agents say they observed the two meeting in a Wal-Mart parking lot, where the supplier delivered the crack to Beard.

The men also attempted to haggle with their suppliers, albeit unsuccessfully: "Like, uh, let me see, cousin want one. I want two. Let's say, won't you give me a deal on, uh, four and a half?" asked Kevin Lee, who goes by Smoothe, according to the indictment.

"We just do the twelve-five, man, all the way up," the supplier responded.

In Lee's case, agents started investigating him after he sold cocaine to a snitch, according to the indictment.

The indictment alleges that John Does Nos. 1 and 2 distributed "large amounts" of drugs from about 2007 to 2013. Five of the seven men named in the indictment appeared in court on Wednesday, where Magistrate Judge Hannah Lauck granted them release to their families on house arrest pending trial.

An arraignment hearing was set for June 6, when the men can enter pleas of guilty or not guilty.
