Home Front: Crafts A-plenty

You’ve seen him on TLC’s “While You Were Out” and “10 Years Younger.” He’s crafty, he’s fresh and he’s always into something. The fifth book from New York and Los Angeles resident Mark Montano, “The Big-Ass Book of Crafts” (Simon & Schuster, $19.95) is packed with more than 150 ideas for the post-baby boomer set, including hanging lights made out of drinking straws, duct-tape side tables, woven-paper wallets and papier-mché Day of the Dead devils. “It’s not about going out and buying a kit; it’s seeing what you have around the house and what you can do with it,” says Montano, who maintains that each project in his book is home-worthy and a great alternative to going out and spending money. “If you just set aside 20 minutes a day, you can really fuel your creative soul, and by the end of the week you have something completed,” he says.

With such chapters as “Artsy Fartsy” and “Sew Darn Easy,” this big, bright and inspiring book has ideas for every budget and skill set. Montano will be at Tinker’s, 2409 Westwood Ave., for a book signing Saturday, March 8, from 2 to 4 pm. Call 359-1843 for details.
