History in Focus: The Life of Widows

All ages. Explore historical topics in detail with staff-led specialty tours that use the historic structures and artifacts as touchstones to the past. Life for a 19th century widow has been referred to as “Civil Death.” Learn how the existence of a woman following her husband’s death depended heavily on the kindness of male relatives. Explore how the Sheppard women of Meadow Farm fared as they outlived their spouses, often by decades.
