Here’s Where You Can Watch the Eclipse in Richmond

Aug. 21

On Monday, Aug. 21, at about 2:45 p.m., the sun is going to play a little hide and seek behind the moon. As you’ve likely heard, we’ve got a solar eclipse on the way, partially viewable here in Richmond. While it won’t be dramatic as some places around the country plunged into darkness, don’t forget you have to wear protective glasses if you’re going to be looking up — without them the sun will appear normal and, as the wordy kids say, burny AF. There are a few local spots getting in on the midday action if you’re looking for a group experience:

Science Museum of Virginia (1 to 4 p.m.): This is the place to be if you want a full education on the eclipse with all the amenities. First 500 attendees get free eclipse glasses, plus sun, moon and star-themed activities outside.

Brown’s Island (1 to 4 p.m.): The National Park Service, American Civil War Museum, James River Park System and Venture Richmond are getting in on the eclipse party action. Their event is free and open to public with NASA-approved viewing eyeglasses available for first 600 folks and junior ranger eclipse booklets for 200 kids between ages of 5 and 14.

Mostly total solar eclipse at Quirk Hotel (2 p.m.): Watch the solar action in style with a cocktail on the Q rooftop and get those goggles on (whichever goggles you need). Hosted by Maple and Pine restaurant; space is limited, first come first served.

Eclipse at Richmond Public Library (2 to 3 p.m.): Go to where the wild ones are — a place filled with books. Refreshments and glasses provided. Maximum view time is 2:44 p.m. Remember, if you miss out, you’ll have to wait until 2024 for another chance.
