Greg Mortenson at the Landmark Theater

Saturday, Jan. 9.

In 1993 Greg Mortenson attempted to climb Pakistan's K2 peak, the world's second highest mountain. Despite being an experienced mountaineer, Mortenson became exhausted and weak during his ascent, stumbling into a village named Korphe. Nursed back to health by the impoverished locals, Mortenson vowed to repay their hospitality by building them a school. What began as an outlandish promise has turned into a successful humanitarian campaign to promote peace and cultural understanding through education and literacy. Chronicling his efforts amidst Pakistan and Afghanistan's ongoing violence, Mortenson is scheduled to speak at the Landmark Theater as part of the Richmond Forum's speaker series Saturday, Jan. 9, at 8 p.m. $36-$70.
