9/11 was a tragedy for the country but a call to action for Rose Chen. The director of the Chinese language program at the University of Richmond formed the Rose Group in response to the attacks as a way for people to enrich their understanding of one another through cultural exchange. This year the group hosts its Second Annual China-America Festival of Film and Culture, featuring a dozen movie screenings, lectures, cooking demonstrations and … wait for it … a Mandarin oratory competition! The festival runs Sept. 25-Oct. 1. Events are free and take place at UR, VCU and the Byrd. For times and information, visit www.therosegroup.org. S
