Re: “Richmond Group Tackling Dilapidated Schools

Richmond Forward is not a Canadian shadow organization looking to infiltrate the Richmond market and front as RPS, although that sounds like a more exciting plot line then a group of citizens gathering to make change.

RPS does spend more per student than the surrounding counties (by a few thousand), but as was stated in other comments, this is similar to other districts in the state with our same student composition and land size, and education as a percentage of the city budget lags behind the most successful counties/school systems in VA.

Why is the facilities bill so dang expensive? Look at the years of disinvestment. Until 2015, the CIP line item for school facility maintenance was a paltry $500,000 for many years, which equates to $0.06 per square foot. Baseline practice for school maintenance and repair costs is $1.40 per square foot.

Years of disinvestment in a home can't be fixed with new light sockets or a coat of paint. We need an overhaul.
