The competition, co-sponsored by the society and Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, recognizes excellence in newspaper design, graphics and photography. Entries came from 190 newspapers in 29 countries. The Society for News Design, founded in 1979, is dedicated to improving news presentation and design in all media.

Closer to home, Bland and Home Style Art Director Mark Jeffries received honors in the Greater Richmond Awards for Design Excellence.

Bland won merit awards in the editorial/publication design category for his cover designs illustrating two Style feature stories, “Jesus on the Job” and “The Windup.” He also received a merit award for his “Age of Iron” illustration, published in the Fiction Issue. He won a best in category award for a poster advertising a local music concert.

Jeffries received a merit award for his cover featuring “The Green Issue,” an environmentally themed edition of Home Style.

The competition, which recognizes outstanding graphic design, is sponsored by the Richmond Chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Artists.

Correction

Keith “Li’l Ronnie” Owens [“Doing What He Does,” Arts&Culture, March 9] co-wrote 10 of the 11 songs on his new album with Michael Dutton.
