Everybody Loves - or Tolerates - Lincoln

You have to dig hard to find people upset that Steven Spielberg plans to film much of his Abraham Lincoln movie in Richmond.

Sure, Gov. Bob McDonnell vetoed $424,001 in public broadcasting funds as not one of the core functions of government a day before announcing that the state would provide nearly $5 million in tax incentives for the Hollywood project. While that had a few National Public Radio supporters harrumphing, Richmonders seem mostly excited about the prospect of seeing Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis around town.

Even the Sons of Confederate Veterans — or at least, one of its most outspoken local members — isn't vexed about the news. "I'd prefer a movie about Robert E. Lee, but this is what Spielberg wants to make. He's put it together," Brag Bowling says. "I'm not opposed to it."

Bowling says he hates seeing the state give tax money to help fund movie making, but that would be the case with any film, notwithstanding McDonnell's claims that it will bring a lot of money to the state. "I know what you're looking for," he says. "You're looking for the SCV to make a stupid radical comment which you can put in Style, and I don't think you're going to get us to do that."
