Amygdala

Want to see 21 bands from 13 states all in one weekend? Swamp Fest is here for you. On Saturday, Aug. 8, at Strange Matter, and Sunday, Aug. 9, at 25 Watt, the locally grown celebration of do-it-yourself emotional music invades this former and forever conflicted Capital of the Confederacy. Richmond is the perfect place for a screaming contest. From the shrieking punk rages of San Antonio’s Amygdala to the jagged abrasions of Richmond’s Truman, the music championed at Swamp Fest is defined by violent outbursts. The primal scream therapies of all the bands playing can all be traced back in some form or fashion to the mid-’80s ruptures of Rites of Spring from Washington. The Dischord band is to emo music what Led Zeppelin is to heavy metal. Varied despite the music’s narrow confine, each group finds its own throat to let the feelings out. Shows start at 6 p.m. Single-night tickets are $10 and weekend passes are $15. swampfest.wordpress.com. — Chris Bopst
