Event Pick: Lawrence Brownlee at the Modlin Center for the Arts

March 19

Like most people, my knowledge of opera is limited. Relegated to dead-art appreciation centers for the pricey entertainment of an ever-dwindling few, one of mankind’s oldest musical expressions has all but lost any resonance with the general public beyond the use of the phrase, “When the fat lady sings.” And that’s a pity, especially when you consider the soaring emotive pipes of Lawrence Brownlee. The tenor has a voice that makes me want to listen to nothing but opera. Listening to Brownlee’s 2014 release, “Virtuoso Rossini Arias,” is an exceptionally powerful experience — the kind of music that makes you feel good to be alive. On Saturday, March 19, the most in-demand American tenor in the world in the bel canto repertoire comes to the University of Richmond for a performance of works by Mozart, Joseph Marx, Franz Liszt, Alberto Ginastera, Ben Moore and pieces from his own Grammy-nominated recording, “Spiritual Sketches.” The performance will be held in Camp Concert Hall at the Modlin Center for the Arts. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. $20-$40. modlin.richmond.edu.
