Event Pick: James River Film Society’s Short Film Competition at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Oct. 20

James River Film Society’s popular annual event is the longest-running juried film competition in Virginia. It highlights short films and videos (20 minutes or shorter) from both local and national filmmakers. A guest judge, filmmaker Michele Poulous, will choose the top entries and award about $2,000 in cash prizes. Many of the filmmakers will be present for a Q&A, and the audience gets to vote for a favorite as well. It takes place Friday, Oct. 20, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. $8 entry, or $5 for museum or society members. jamesriverfilm.org.
