Event Pick: Honduras Movie Screening and Fundraiser at the Byrd Theatre

Oct. 15

The Byrd Theatre screens “Voices Beyond the Wall: 12 Love Poems from the Murder Capital of the World” on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 4:30 p.m. The movie is about Our Little Roses, a girls’ orphanage in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, a city plagued by drugs and poverty that regularly tops the list of the world’s most dangerous places. The orphanage cares for 70 girls and shares space with a bilingual school for 200 children, all behind 10-foot walls topped with barbed wire.

The movie, produced by James Franco, follows an Episcopal priest and poet and his efforts in 2012 to teach the girls to write their own poems. An anthology of the poems, “Counting Time Like People Count the Stars,” will be released the day the film plays in Richmond. Tickets cost $12.

The money raised goes toward sending one of the girls to Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Honduras. http://bit.ly/2fQnu9B.
