Dec. 12

Even though jazz is about as popular with the music-buying public these days as trips to the proctologist, it was the pop music of the first half of 20th century. After bebop and the birth of rock and roll, the music lost its appeal with the mainstream and it became more of a heady pursuit than a party enabler. Elana Lisa and the Hot Mess play the type of jazz that gets people out on the dance floor. With a set full of classics by Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, the Richmond group plays the hits and original compositions with a bawdy sense of engagement between performer and audience that was once the root of the genre’s inclusive appeal. Fun, musical and danceable, Elana Lisa and the Hot Mess jump, jive and wail Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Tin Pan. Showtime is at 7 p.m. Admission is $10. tinpanrva.com.
