Erykah Badu at Fridays at Sunset

Friday, Aug. 6

Erykah Badu made headlines earlier this year when she walked through Dallas shedding her clothes along the site of President Kennedy's assassination for a guerrilla-style music video of her song, “Window Seat.” Whether committed for its shock value or some genuine artistic rebellion, Badu has always been one of the more eccentric songwriters of modern soul music. With a point of view unafraid to focus heavily on social and political change, racial pride and female liberation, Badu's Billie Holiday-like drawl feels just as warm over hip-hop beats as it does over horn-laced grooves. Continuing to experiment with funky textures and mix-tape-style samples on her latest album, “New Amerykah, Pt. 2: Return of the Ankh,” Badu performs at Kanawha Plaza on Friday, Aug. 6, at 6 p.m. $45-$75.
