Re: “Why Sweet Briar Is Closing

Women can go to any public university and get a quality engineering degree for far cheaper. I personally wouldn't want the words "Sweet Briar" anywhere on my resume - ridiculous - and if I were an employer and saw that someone went there I'd automatically assume they have little to no exposure to the real world. I think Peter's comments about it being a finishing school are accurate. It is a school for affluent young women who want a comfortable, ritzy education.

Re: “A Deathly Island

The irony, that is, if it had been a Northern prison as opposed to a Southern prison. But I'll tell you, Northerners in that day had just as many prejudices as Southerners did. There wasn't some grand racial utopia up North.

Re: “A Deathly Island

Of course the treatment goes both ways with prisoners. I never said it doesn't. I'm just pointing out that in this particular article, related to Belle Isle, that blacks are not being represented. I would have said the same thing about an article from the North, and, additionally, would have pointed out the irony.

Re: “A Deathly Island

In fact, if I had to guess. Lauren is white, with very little exposure to the real world. Is either extremely privileged or works a dead end job at a gas station. Either way, no exposure. Probably thinks poor people and blacks "get what they deserve because they don't work hard enough," and that they should pray their way out of their miserable situations - or else aren't working hard enough because they're all lazy. Right?

Re: “A Deathly Island

I think Mark brings up a good point. I think Lauren is the idiot here - she knows nothing about racial relations during this time period.
