Re: “Corner Market

Food Crusader I don't think the article so much explains the need to subsidize as it does demonstrate how disastrous the Farm Policy is:

"These policies succeeded in boosting the productivity of American farmers, yet today they are obsolete and counterproductive, providing billions in public support to an industry that churns out a surfeit of unhealthy calories — while at the same time undermining the ability of the world’s farmers to make a living from their land."

I was just merely pointing out that the food we purchase in the grocery store has a much higher cost than what we are aware of. If we need to subsidize food then that's fine but only subsidizing large bumper crops of corn and soy beans is not healthy for the soil it grows on, the animals that feed off of it and the people who consume it. I think the main point of the piece is to overhaul a broken system that spends wasteful dollars on backhanded actions. As I was say about an unkown associated cost to our food, the taxes we pay are used on these policies and others:

'The government now finds itself in the absurd position of financing both sides in the war on Type 2 diabetes, a disease that, along with its associated effects, now costs $245 billion, or 23 percent of the national deficit in 2012, to treat each year. The government subsidizes soda with one hand, while the other writes checks to pay for insulin pumps. This is not policy; this is insanity."

Food Crusader I'm not saying we must all buy organic chicken or anything of that nature though I think it's important we realize how we can get these products so inexpensively. We pay for it through the back door of our taxes to Congress who into gives subsidiezes to approved producers and suppliers. The goods they offer are detrimental and toxic to us and the enviroment. We all have the power of free choice in this society but I think we aren't all given equal information as to how to make our choice

Re: “Corner Market

Yes but Polyface does not have the assistance of Government subsidies nor does it use corn based feed which is also subsidized by the government. The industrial food chain is so heavily indebted to help from the government that taking away all of these programs to prop up these crops would cost you more for that boneless skinless breast at walmart than would the product being produced in Virginia. You are paying much more for that commercial chicken but in a more roundabout way. Whether you like Polyface or not the product is much more sound for your body and the enviromemt
