Re: “Reconstruction

Not Hate, but Heritage?
A heritage requiring the enslavement of 100's of thousands?
Requiring 100's of thousands of deaths in an attempt to defend and promote this "honored" way of life?
Tragic.
Just imagine what a tragedy it would have been, for the entire world, if the Confederacy had actually been successful.

Re: “The Way Out

I moved to Richmond from Nashville just under 3 years ago, and I've been watching this debate since I first became aware of it.
I have also heard all of the arguments against building a stadium for the Squirrels that I heard when Nashville was considering whether or not to build a stadium for the Titans.
I was solidly against the change- too costly, the too small to support it, give the money to the schools- they need help, bad location, only some will benefit, etc., etc.

Boy! was I wrong...

Nashville, a state capital, and a river city (although, I would never consider swimming in the Cumberland- EVER), and a city of the same size as Richmond, with similar demographics, had a lot of challenges then.
Lots of vacant buildings downtown, just as Richmond has now, and a general feel of a need for a lift.
While the rest of us have suffered through a dismal economy, Nashville had a building boom- refurbishing existing real estate, and creating new- to attempt to keep up with both business and residential demand. Jobs to be filled. Residential taxes stabilized.
A city on the move.
The city of Richmond recently sent a delegation to Nashville to find out what they are doing right.
All levels of society have been able to take advantage of the growth and energy.

Was the building of the Titans stadium the sole cause for all of this positive change?
No.
It did enable it, though, and, signal to the country that Nashville was all in.

Two very similar cities- one booming while the other struggles.

It doesn't have to be that way.
