Created Equal Film Series in honor of Grady W. Powell: Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot

Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot (2015, 40 minutes) tells the story of the forgotten heroes in the fight for voting rights—the courageous students and teachers of Selma, Alabama. By standing up against injustice despite intimidation, arrest, and violence, these protesters achieved one of the most significant victories of the civil rights era. The documentary, which is narrated by Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer, serves as a reminder that each of us has the ability to bring about powerful social change by exercising our right to participate in our democracy.

This series is named in honor of Reverend Powell, who has served on the VHS board since 1996 and as honorary vice chair since 2011, and is instrumental in the development of relevant and accessible programming. He presided over the historic Gillfield Baptist Church, founded in 1788, for thirty-six years.
