Cream in the Coffee

Gary Owen's the white guy who hosted BET's "Comic View," a show on a black-themed cable network owned by white folks. But before you write him off as the result of an equal-opportunity policy turned inside-out, consider his résumé. Owen honed his act in African-American clubs in California. He had the nerve to enter a contest called the "Funniest Black Comedian in San Diego" -- and won. He's appeared in films with Eddie Murphy, The Wayans Brothers and Jamie Foxx. Still, Owen comes off as more Opie than Eminem, which makes his hilarious racial observations honest and keeps him from getting his ass kicked. Owen will be at the Funny Bone Jan. 9-13. $14-$17. 521-8900.
