Re: “Up From the Valley

So many good memories of Shockoe Bottom. My rural protestant family always shopped "downtown" and considered all those diverse merchants personal friends. Everything I wore in my childhood, like my parents, and their parents before them, came from that neighborhood. Lavine's Department Store was a favorite. No finer people ever existed than the Lavines. And Cowardin Jewelers, Powell Brothers Shoes, Scott's Drug Store, 17th St Market; there was no reason ever to go "uptown" (Thalhimers and Miller & Rhoads) except to visit Santa at Christmas. And the icing on the cake: getting to watch the trains coming and going from Main St Station. It was a perfect 1950s world for a little boy to grow up in.
