Richmond artist Rootz spray-paints his contribution in a contest that's part of the Richmond Street Art Festival during a pre-event party. The winner gets to design a 12-by-18-foot mural that's featured in the festival, which runs Sept. 11-15.

In the process, the former GRTC Transit System's depot on Cary Street will be transformed into an outdoor art gallery featuring dozens of local and national artists. Organizers estimate more than 500 people enjoyed food and beer trucks and bought prints of last year's murals to raise money for last week's event.

An online fundraising campaign at indiegogo.com aims to raise $20,000 toward the event.
