Re: “Advocates Say Mayor Stoney's Education Compact is Code for Privatization in Schools

YES!!! Thank you, Kenya for speaking what so very many of us RPS parents are thinking. Levar Stoney received my vote, and I hope he will listen to his supporters/constituents on this PIVOTAL issue...the one I told him during the campaign was THE most important issue to me as an RVA citizen.

We LOVE our city, as so many Richmond residents do. Parents of younger children in our 3rd district neighborhood (and beyond) get VERY excited when I share that our twins are now in RPS high schools, and that they have been in RPS consistently from their kindergarten year. Invariably, the first question is, "How can we navigate that for our family? We support public schools, but...."
It's that "but" that I understand, and that should break all of our hearts.

I am going out on a very sturdy limb and state that those concerned would-be RPS parents are NOT looking for schools with the highest SOL scores, "student performance," and graduation rates. They want their children to go to schools where they are SAFE---where the teachers and administrators are compensated fairly, and they engage fully with the students and demonstrate caring, and discipline when needed.. They want reassurance roofs aren't leaking and mold isn't pervasive. They want public schools wherein the student body reflects the community population in all its glorious diversity. And oh, how we would ALL love to have the RPS school for which we are naturally zoned be not just viable, but the perfect, neighborhood supporting location for our kids' education.

Please RPS parents, I KNOW we are all ready for summer, but we MUST be alert and vocal in these coming weeks.
