Re: “Gov. McAuliffe Splices and Dices on the Green Front

This is Cat McCue, communications director with Appalachian Voices. Our organization-- founded two decades ago to protect the air, water, land and communities of central and southern Appalachia-- supports Gov. McAuliffe’s action this week to reduce harmful carbon pollution from the state’s electric utility sector. It was the right and smart thing to do, right because of the tremendous harms that a warming climate poses to Virginia’s citizens, economy and environment, and smart because of the very real economic and public health benefits of moving the commonwealth to employ the cleaner energy resources of wind, solar and efficiency. We remain gravely concerned about the climate impacts and the local impacts of the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline, Mountain Valley Pipeline, and other major investments in natural gas infrastructure, which would lock us into decades more of relying on a fuel that has at least as much, perhaps more dire impacts for the climate, not to mention the on-the-ground impacts to water and wildlife, historic and cultural resources, and Virginia property owners.
