Re: “Keeping Up Kanawha

I work at Riverfront Plaza and my office window looks right down on the park. I've often crossed through the park after grabbing lunch on Grace Street's new Restaurant Row and have found it nothing but lovely, if under-maintained, and.....empty. I was really excited to dig into this article and hear some viable action items about revitalizing it. The end was a bait and switch, shoulder shrug! It's not THAT difficult to access by foot-- frankly, crossing the intersection at 10th and Cary gives me more worry with cars hardly yielding to foot traffic right of way unless it's the lunchtime herd. I would love an outdoor alternative to the James Center plaza at lunch. What about concerts? Movies in the park? Al fresco yoga classes? Fundraisers? An urban farmers market on Saturdays? Surely, with the over abundance of parking garages and lack of robust lunch patronage 30% of the week, the downtown restaurants and shops could use the crowds. It would revitalize an otherwise ho-hum daytime downtown scene, desperately needed to compete against comparable markets. We have the space... We should use it. And we should be proud to have such spaces. Making our downtown just as lively at 1pm as 1am on a Saturday should be a priority. We have momentum now to bring life back to downtown and return it to its yesteryear glory. This is low hanging fruit to do so.
