Re: “John Torres

Wow this is tough. John was my instructor during my freshman year at vcu 1979. He headed the drawing portion of our freshman schedule and many thought he was extreme ~ we had to draw with our opposite hand for the first 6 months and we had to do 50 sketches a day of the physical human body. His goal was to break us of old habits. He wanted us to draw using the creative side of our brains. We weren't able to use color until late in the last semester. For me it worked. He asked me once, when we started using color ,"what are you doing here? You should be in ny!" It was a compliment and one that I was embarrassed about. He admired my work and at semester end, he asked me to give him slides of my work for his future classes. I gave him my freshman portfolio and I never received it back. I'd love to have it but I am not sure where it may be! John Torres inspired and encouraged me and my work. He set no boundaries as he knew I didn't need them. I think of him often and all of the naked
Models I had to draw In studio. :). John was my most positive influence at vcu. I graduated in 1983. Thank you John and rest well. Candee Harris
