Re: “Last Gasp: What Richmond's Future Holds in the Final Days of a Lame-Duck Mayor

A city should:

a) run like a smooth operation with all departments working at 100% efficiency (especially the finance department). You can't provide the necessary functions if the core administrative structure can't manage to do the things required of it.

b) do its own job well and let the economic developers be of the private sector. The idea is to grow private enterprise. City governments are not set up to run businesses -- but rather are set up to provide an environment in which a business can succeed and thus help the communities so both can thrive.

c) have a clear direction for the city government and the citizenry. If we are not all working together, the we are pulling ourselves apart. There is no in between. If our region can coalesce behind one common vision, just think of the progress.

The voters for the next mayor should be looking for someone who's not tied to the establishment, who's not a puppet of the power brokers that have influenced City Hall for decades. If you go that route, we will just get more of the same. It must be someone who, first, can get the city running like a fine-tuned machine, and who has the personality and character to get not only public and private sectors within the city on the same page, but the regional entities as well.
