Black and White and Red in Places

O massive Chicago in all its grayness, like a winter sky with streetlights! Big cities can have an almost mythic absence of color, as though the scale of the thing makes human considerations like color unnecessary. British-turned-Virginian artist Yvonne Humphries looks at how much color implies life in "Chicago in Red," a photography show opening at The Gallery Art and Design with a preview Thursday, May 4, 5-8 p.m., and a First Friday opening May 5, 6-9 p.m. Humphries' show looks at the great gray scale of Chicago's buildings, streets and trains and adds red detail, a little pulse of life and color. Go see the writing on the wall at The Gallery through May 31. 355-0102. S
