The "hot" part of hot yoga can be intimidating for first-timers. If voluntarily entering a room that's heated to around 100 degrees sounds counterintuitive, spending an hour in there doing an intense workout of stretching and balancing may sound plum crazy. But at Hot Yoga RVA, the heat is an intentional, therapeutic part of the practice.

The studio's roots are in Virginia Beach, where the original location made its debut in 2005. Owned by husband-and-wife duo Jimmy and Kristen Yax, both Richmond spaces offer three types of classes: the fast-paced hot flow, hot stability featuring the same sequence of stationary poses each time, and hot yin, the slowest, gentlest of the offerings. Membership options include five classes per month for $49, eight classes per month for $89 or unlimited classes for $109. Yogis also have the option of buying 10- or 20-class cards, which expire a year after purchase. First-timers who may not yet be ready to commit to a full membership can try out three weeks of unlimited down dog and savasana for $59.
