Second Place: Osaka Sushi and Steak

Third Place: Sticky Rice

To the legions of Richmond sushi and sashimi aficionados, it’s all about the food, not the dining room. Still, ever since Akida moved from its cramped, dark digs on Robinson Street to the lighter, sleeker Sheppard Street location in 2015, scores of other Japanese food lovers have found the best-kept secret in town. Quality ingredients make for melt-in-your-mouth sushi and generous sashimi slices. The only downside to Akida is how small it remains despite the move, but savvy regulars know that with proper timing, you can have a stellar meal without having to wait much and — just as key — without emptying your wallet.
