Second Place: Garnett's Cafe
Third Place: Coppola's Deli
Walk down those steps on Belmont Avenue and you enter a place that doesn't change along with the outside world — and that's just fine with the regulars who've been coming since Calvin Coolidge was president. The sailor sandwich with beer-boiled knockwurst, pastrami and swiss has been around for decades but the menu has been known to be updated with additions such as the PLTC — a prosciutto, lettuce, tomato and cheddar nod to a hipper culinary world. And talk about updates, Chiocca's now has Wi-Fi and finally takes credit cards, two things no one ever thought would happen in this gloriously retro subterranean spot. Garnett's Cafe sports a winsome lunch counter and array of unique sandwiches such as the Bon Vivant, layering ham, coleslaw, swiss and sriracha mayo on ciabatta. We're betting that Coppola's win has much to do with the Industrial, easily the finest Italian sub to be found in the River City.
