Second Place: Photosynthesizers

Third Place: Gritty City Records

This category features two newcomers — the beat collective Satellite Syndicate jumps into the fray at first-place. Syndicate is a collective of electronic musicians, producers and DJs. Started by VCU student and producer BSTFRND, the crew also features local hip-hop artist Døøf and producers including Plaad, Sittasines, Jxtpse. and ScoopKid. They may have given up on spelling, but they’ve been known to rock the block upstairs at Steady Sounds — and you should definitely check out their Bandcamp page. Veteran hip-hop group Photosynthesizers has laid the groove for many a local party with its live instrumentation and philosophical bent. And Gritty City Records, a raw collaborative crew that’s lost a few members tragically through the years, still includes skilled emcees with such names as Johnny Ciggs, Fan Ran and Skweeky Watahfawls. The group has connections to veteran local hip-hop artists such as Divine Profitz, and you gotta love that one of its most recent releases was called “Food Court Gods.”
