Second place: Scuba
Third place: Black Liquid
Richmond's Photosynthesizers take the hip-hop crown for a third year. Exploding onto the music scene in 2008, they quickly formed their unique sound with traces of indie rock, hip-hop and soul. That and their high-energy performances have made them a band likely to be playing a festival near you. According to the group, a Photosynthesizers show is like having a bunch of mirrors: Everything from the stage to the crowd is reflecting relative opposites and the group angles themselves to experience a true reflection of their music. Or how fellow hip hop collaborator Official Freeze puts it, it's "an audio orgasm." as for Scuba, he's been making waves in the hip-hop community by keeping the music true to himself. And Black Liquid, a pillar of Richmond's hip-hop scene, has opened for the likes of Snoop.
*this entry has been edited: the Photosynthesizers did not play the Summer Spirit Festival festival as previously reported. Style Weekly regrets the error.
