Thousands of choices at Total Wine and More make it a true superstore, with plenty of fans and hall-of-fame status. If Once Upon a Vine conjures images of wine bottles growing on trees, the store hopes to come as close to that fantasy as possible. Owner Robert Kocher ran a market on Strawberry Street in the Fan for almost two decades before he decided to prioritize fermented food groups. Once Upon a Vine credits its success to down-to-earth service and a huge selection of beer and wine. It has the largest selection of Virginia wine in Virginia, and there are weekly Friday tastings. The original MacArthur Avenue store celebrated its 13th anniversary this month and Stratford Hills has seven years under its belt. Some things just get better with age.
