The way we treat our pets has changed dramatically over the past several decades. Especially dogs, which were work animals or lived in backyards until recently. Michael Hughes, whose family opened Holiday Barn 45 years ago, oversees two facilities with swimming pools, one-on-one playtime for shy pups and kitty condos with aquariums. “Society has evolved on how they think animals should be housed and cared for,” Hughes says. “That’s allowed us to change our business. It’s been fun.” Two years ago, after expanding the Glen Allen site, Holiday Barn broke ground on a new South Side facility that has lots of indoor and outdoor play areas, as well as pet lodging. You may see Hughes’ youngest dog, a yellow Lab named Trapper who’s just younger than a year and recently earned his canine good citizen certification.
