Anyone who's walked into the Virginia Museum since its massive renovation can see how the museum is one of Richmond's greatest cultural treasures. Blockbuster shows continue to prove that Director Alex Nyerges and his superb curatorial staff have the Midas touch when it comes to scoring must-see exhibits. After delivering such myriad shows as the massive felt whale, "Mocha Dick," the photographic look back of "Elvis at 21" and the crowd-pleasing glass of Dale Chihuly, the museum's playing host to the country's first major retrospective of pop artist Tom Wesselmann through July 28. Add a thriving late-night scene on Thursdays and Fridays with jazz, tango, opera and film, and you hit the museum jackpot. The Science Museum's votes no doubt come from its broader programming, meaning it isn't just for kids and school groups anymore. Take "Guitar: the Instrument That Rocked the World." With programming that brought in regional guitarists for almost daily shows in the midst of the exhibit, it was a far cry from dry science. The Children's Museum takes third, proving that Richmond parents will always vote for a place that keeps the little ones entertained and happy.
