Apparently theater company constituencies don't shift much from year to year, because the results for this category have been identical for four years running. Virginia Rep built a solid season last year around such tent poles as its lavish "The Music Man" and near-perfect "Fiddler on the Roof" while keeping kids happy with such rousers as the recent "Shrek the Musical." Under new management, the Firehouse has been actively courting a younger, off-Broadway-like crowd with joints like "Pop! Or Who Shot Andy Warhol?" Richmond Triangle Players consistently pushes boundaries. Its "Bare: a Pop Opera" was a big winner at the annual Richmond Theatre Critics Circle awards.
