Some shoppers couldn’t care less about chain-store efficiencies. For them, the local market is about a community and its idiosyncrasies along with the groceries. Ellwood Thompson’s — at the intersection of Ellwood and Thompson (you wouldn’t believe how long it takes people to make that connection) — reigns in the natural and organic food market among voters and tops it with a killer smoothie bar and yummy buffet spread. It offers plenty of table space to nurse strong, local coffee. Libbie Market, formerly Joe’s Market, is a Near West End favorite. This is in part for its dinner specials, in part for its free goodies if you spend more than 50 bucks, and in part because everyone really does know your name. Little House Green Grocery is all about local food — buying it, selling it, promoting it, being, in other words, a hub that connects the neighborhood to farmers and food artisans.
