Placing first for the second year in a row, the One Bed & Breakfast’s owners, Polly and Sean Brooks, are celebrating their sixth year of business. “We’ve met so many people and made some lifetime friendships,” Polly says. “We were most surprised by how deep the relationships are.” After converting their home on Boulevard and Ellwood to a B&B, the Brookses have found steady business, particularly during local film festivals, races — marathon runners go right by the inn — and exhibits at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Learning how to be a successful host requires customer feedback, Polly says. “You just learn that some people like Sweet ‘N Low, and some like sugar.”
