Second Place: Ipanema Cafe

Third Place: Fresca on Addison

Rare is the Richmond restaurant that has an entire menu of gluten-free foods. Usually it's a token gesture or a couple of options at best, but at Selba in the Fan, more than a dozen dishes, from sides to meaty mains, make the list. Fans love the clarity of the cafe's mission — healthy food in lovely garden environs — and for those wanting gluten-free fare, the only problem is narrowing down the options. Quinoa cakes, polenta grilled cheese and even penne pasta make the grade, with many more choices including shrimp and grits and brisket. In its redesigned quarters in the Fan, longtime vegetarian favorite Ipanema Cafe continues to win followers for its awareness of dietary needs. In the gluten-free category, Ipanema always has choices that are creative and appealing. Owner Kendra Feather and crew keep raising the bar for healthy, meat-free eating. Same for Fresca on Addison, where owner Jenna Sneed listens to her customers and creates options they can love. Gluten-free pastries are always on the counter, and the menu's entree options have a number of fan favorites.
