Second Place: Galaxy Diner

Third Place: Millie’s Diner

Some things never change, and that’s the appeal of the diner in a trend-obsessed restaurant world. Guests know what they want from a diner — comfort food, friendly service and reliable hours — and they like what they get at River City Diner. All three locations are known for milkshakes and burgers and the usual breakfast-to-dinner familiars, delivered to booths and tables quickly and with ease. Families know they’re welcome, and in the later hours, drinkers know they’ll feel better after a filling. In a more distant realm, Galaxy Diner in Carytown plays well to kids and those who like some novelty with their food. Richmond knows it can count on Galaxy for fried desserts, spacey décor, and more PBR sales than anywhere else. In contrast, Millie’s Diner in Shockoe Bottom is serious about food, more upscale in price point, and more likely to be named in a national food magazine for its habit-forming brunch and foodie-approved seasonal menu.
