Third Place: Murry and Kuhn Family and Cosmetic Dentistry
As a young dentist in the early 1970s, Dr. Baxter Perkinson already had a reputation as one of the top students at the Medical College of Virginia's Dental School. He went into practice on Forest Hill Avenue in 1974, but he did something most young dentists didn't: He hired a business manager, Gil Roberts, to run the operation. Today, Perkinson's practice employs more than 40 dentists at 10 locations. Roberts says the newest location, off Woolridge Road in Midlothian, will open next summer with 16,000 square feet. It's a family business — three of Perkinson's children also became dentists — with the sophistication of a chain. "There's no other dental practice the size of ours in Virginia," Roberts says. "It's just a different model."
