Second Place: Mama J’s Kitchen

Third Place: Lunch/Supper

Comfort owner Jason Alley turned the stove over to chef Travis Milton, and although meatloaf and pulled pork barbecue, North Carolina-style, haven’t left the menu, Milton brings his Appalachian heritage to every dish he makes. He’s a vinegar maniac and he makes his own — 40 varieties and counting — and can turn out a mean pickled anything. The mac ’n’ cheese makes children plead when you accidentally drive by and the squash casserole is better than any Southern grandmother makes. Make a reservation or you’ll find yourself waiting — not necessarily a bad thing when it means loitering with a cocktail made by Derek Salerno at the bar. Mamma J’s Kitchen makes fried catfish both crispy and tender, plus chicken and dumplings that will send you straight back to childhood. And with Lunch and Supper in Scott’s Addition, you get just what the names say, including sandwiches and shrimp and grits.
