A New Zealand-inspired gastro-pub has stolen voters' hearts when it comes to that most basic of food needs, a good burger. How? "It starts with quality," bar manager Joe Holmberg says — "grass-fed beef raised organically. And we don't just slop stuff on the plate. We make sure the flavors complement each other without being too pretentious. After all, it is a burger." His point's well-taken — even the ketchup and mustard are organic. Staff members like to gauge their customers' reactions when the food comes. "I've seen some chair dancing when people take their first bite," Holmberg says. Barely a block away is the funky and colorful Carytown Burgers and Fries with easily the longest list of specialty and vegetarian burgers around. It wouldn't be surprising if it didn't earn some of its votes from the stellar milkshakes, made from Virginia's own Homestead Creamery ice cream, and the ideal complement to a burger. Despite being a chain, Five Guys Burgers and Fries is a favorite, meaning local diners are willing to support the industrial burger complex when the burgers are good and locations plentiful.
