Ben Kweller at Maymont Park

Friday, July 23

Since delivering a precocious batch of slacker-inspired alt pop on his 2002 debut “Sha Sha,” songwriter Ben Kweller has made a name for himself with songs that have never been afraid to be a little offbeat, if nonetheless charming for their goofball awkwardness. Whether delivering energetic power pop on the piano, channeling Ben Folds and Billy Joel, or vulnerable, self-deprecating ballads a la Rivers Cuomo, Kweller and his fiery mop of red hair have matured musically. His most recent album, “Changing Horses,” accentuates flits of heartland rock and pedal-steel guitar into his already established '60s pop pep. Opening for Old Crow Medicine Show, Ben Kweller performs at Maymont Park on Friday, July 23, at 6 p.m. $25-$30.
